Gib van Ert is The Executive Legal Officer to the Chief Justice of Canada, the Rt. Hon. Beverley McLachlin, serving a two-year term, when he will return to practice commercial and public law litigation with Hunter Litigation Chambers in Vancouver. The Executive Legal Officer acts as principal adviser to the Chief Justice and is responsible for media relations at the Supreme Court of Canada.
Mr. van Ert is the author of Using International Law in Canadian Courts, 2nd ed. (Irwin Law, 2008), co-author (with Mark Freeman) of International Human Rights Law (Irwin Law, 2004), and a regular contributor to the Canadian Yearbook of International Law. Mr. van Ert has taught on international law and reception issues at the University of Victoria, University of Ottawa, and University of British Columbia. He is a former law clerk of both the Supreme Court of Canada and the Court of Appeal for British Columbia, and was once visiting scholar at the Lauterpacht Research Centre for International Law at the University of Cambridge. Mr. van Ert has an MA in law from the University of Cambridge and an LLM from the University of Toronto.
