Pillay, Sukanya

Prior to becoming Executive Director and General Counsel of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association & Education Trust (CCLA), Sukanya Pillay was Director of its then-new National Security Program where she advanced CCLA’s effort to ensure Canada’s counterterrorism activities comply with the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Ms. Pillay has appeared before the Supreme Court of Canada and bodies worldwide to argue for the protection of fundamental rights as a prerequisite for the effective protection of peace and security in Canada. Ms. Pillay has also run high-profile programs for international NGOs, taught law at the University of Windsor, made dozens of missions to conflict zones worldwide, and created documentary films.
