The Honourable Michel Bastarache, a retired Puisne Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada, was awarded a companion of the Order of Canada for his lifelong commitment to the promotion of linguistic duality and the protection of minority rights. Mr. Bastarache is a distinguished jurist, scholar, professor, author and businessman, and is currently with Heenan Blaikie LLP as counsel in the Litigation Group. Before his time in office, Justice Bastarache worked as the President and Chief Executive Officer of Assumption Mutual life. He was later appointed to the New Brunswick Court of Appeal in 1995 and promoted to the Supreme Court in 1997. Justice Bastarache is a graduate of the University of Montcon, University of Nice and the University of Ottawa where he obtained his LLB. He went on to lecture at his alma mater in law, later becoming Dean of the law school. He was also Associate Dean of the Common Law section at the University of Ottawa.
